The Department of Mechanical Engineering started its official activities in the field of Heat and Fluid Mechanics from 1994, and from 1997, students were also accepted in the field of Solid Design. About 1200 students have graduated from this department to date. Since 2000, the department has accepted students in the field of Applied Design for a Master's degree, and from 2003 in the field of Energy Conversion for a Master's degree, from 2013 in the field of Renewable Energy for a Master's degree, and from 2014 in the field of Manufacturing for a Master's degree. In 2008, the department also accepted its first cohort of doctoral students in the field of Energy Conversion, and in 2010, the first cohort of doctoral students in the field of Applied Design.
Faculty members of this department have carried out various research projects in collaboration with industries in the province, such as Alloy Steel, Power Plants, Electricity Company, and Defense Industries. In addition to various workshops and common laboratories for undergraduate programs, the Mechanical Engineering Department of Yazd University has research laboratories such as Wind Tunnel, Advanced Tensile Testing, Control and Mechatronics, and Industrial Vibrations Laboratory, which are accessible to those interested in experimental research. Faculty members of this department are engaged in various research areas such as Fracture Mechanics, Impact Mechanics, Numerical Methods in Solid Mechanics, Boundary Element Methods, Meshless Methods, Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics, Control, Robotics, Mechatronics, Nonlinear Vibrations, Random Vibrations, Structural Vibration Monitoring, Various Manufacturing Methods, Renewable Energies (such as Solar Energy, Wind Energy, etc.), and Numerical and Experimental Methods in Fluid Mechanics.
