Introduction to the Department of Social Sciences

In the era of globalization, urbanization, and industrial transformations, social life has become one of the most complex subjects of scientific study. Unlike traditional societies, where social phenomena were discussed on the fringes of other disciplines, the advent of the modern era made the study of human societies as an independent subject essential. With technological advancements, social issues and problems have also increased. The need for well-thought-out solutions to address these multi-layered social challenges and transformations highlights the importance and necessity of continuous scientific and research activities in fields related to social sciences.

In this context, training committed and specialized individuals equipped with scientific and research skills has become one of the priorities of the higher education system. The Faculty of Social Sciences at Yazd University, aiming to achieve this goal, began its activities by launching a bachelor's degree program in "Cooperation and Social Welfare" in 1996 and a bachelor's degree in "Anthropology" in 1998. Due to the need for expanding graduate education and responding to society's demand for trained and skilled human resources, a master's degree program in "Sociology" was introduced for the first time in 2006, with 8 students being admitted.

In the same year, the Higher Education Development Council approved the establishment of the "Faculty of Social Sciences" at Yazd University. The continued quantitative and qualitative development of academic programs and activities in this faculty gained further momentum with the incorporation of the "Information Science and Knowledge Studies" department in 2010. The faculty now operates across eleven disciplines and specializations at the undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels.
