The inception of the Department of Mathematics at Yazd University in 1990 marked the commencement of academic endeavors in diverse mathematical domains, encompassing pure mathematics, applied mathematics within computer science, and operational research. Subsequently, in 1992, the amalgamation of Tarbiat Moallem University into Yazd University led to the assimilation of the former's Mathematics department, established in 1976, into the framework of the Department of Mathematics at Yazd University. This integration extended the historical continuum of the faculty's activities back to 1976.
The year 1995 witnessed the inauguration of the Master's program in Mathematics, followed by the initiation of the first doctoral program in Mathematics in 2005. Noteworthy institutional developments occurred in 2010 when the departments of pure and applied mathematics underwent separation. Concurrently, in 2011, the Master's program in Financial Mathematics was introduced, enhancing the interdisciplinary scope of mathematical studies.
In response to the interdisciplinary demands of the academic landscape and the pedagogical necessity to provide foundational courses in statistics and probability, the Faculty of Mathematics embarked on the recruitment of specialized faculty members proficient in statistics. During the period spanning from 1990 to 1999, the Faculty successfully recruited three esteemed faculty members.
The establishment of the Statistics department in 2005 signified a pivotal milestone, paralleled by its commencement of undergraduate admissions in the same year. Subsequently, in 2007, the Master's program in Statistics was established, followed by the inception of its doctoral counterpart in 2012. Furthermore, from October 2016 onwards, the Statistics department began admitting students in the field of socio-economic statistics, augmenting its academic portfolio.
In addition to its established programs, the Faculty embarked on initiatives in emerging fields, exemplified by the admission of students for a Master's degree in data science since 2020. Presently, the Faculty comprises four distinct educational departments, delineated as follows:
- Department of Pure Mathematics
- Department of Applied Mathematics
- Department of Computer Science
- Department of Statistics
